Polartec® Alpha®

Designed specifically for elite military units

Polartec® Alpha® was designed alongside US Special Operations Forces (SOF) in order to create layers that suited the specific needs of those in kinetic, combat situations. What these elite military units needed in mountainous terrain, where temperature variations could be extreme, were layers that were breathable, quick drying and packable yet provided sufficient insulation for demanding, stop-start activities. In response to this challenging brief, Polartec developed the world's first active insulation, Polartec Alpha. One such test of the new fabric's credentials saw it submerged for 15 minutes by SOF Operators in a river during winter whilst wearing their entire protective combat uniform before the Operators emerged from the water and walked the system dry.

Combining two smart fabrics

The lattice shape of Polartec Alpha permits a small amount of airflow that enhances breathability, so Alpha can be worn in a wider range of activities without the need to add or shed layers. Alpha's structural integrity also means it won't spill out in the unlikely event of a rupture or migrate into clusters that can create hot and cold spots.

In addition to unprecedented levels of breathability and moisture vapor transport, Polartec Alpha still insulates effectively while wet and offers dramatically faster dry times. In order to maximise the performance of Polartec Alpha we chose to pair this with a face fabric that provided additional weather resistance without compromising the breathability that makes Alpha ideal for performance clothing. Pertex equilibrium

A unique fabric structure

Pertex Equilibrium is so named for its ability to balance wind and water resistance with breathability, something that is key for those undertaking dynamic activities in changing conditions. Owing to its unique "double wave" structure, which combines a tightly woven outer face with an openly woven inner face, Pertex Equilibrium provides a positive degree of weatherproofing and wicks moisture away from the body during exercise. Fabric structure aside, a durable water repellent has also been applied to further bolster protection against light rain and snow.
