- Spot (or smell) visible dirt, grime, or sweat accumulating on your collar, cuffs, or anywhere else? That's your sign to wash.
- Soft shell jackets often have a fleece lining that provides warmth. If this fleece flattens and loses its loft (puffiness), it's time you give it a refresh.
- Been exposed to dirt, dust, or salt spray? Your jacket will need washing sooner.
- Is water soaking in instead of beading up? That means the water repellent needs some TLC.

Every soft shell is different. Find the care label and read it religiously. It'll tell you the ideal temperature, cycle, and any warnings to heed.
Tackling mud or grime? Pretreat your soft shell with a gentle detergent and warm water on a soft sponge. Let it work its magic, then rinse thoroughly.
Close all the zippers and fasten any velcro closures to prevent them from snagging on other garments during the wash cycle.
Put your soft shell jacket in the machine. You can wash it with similar clothes, but avoid overloading the machine. This will allow for better rinsing.

Avoid hot water washing or high heat drying. Hot water can damage the jacket's fabric and waterproofing treatment.
Skip harsh detergents and fabric softeners. These can clog the pores of the fabric, reducing breathability and waterproofing. Opt for a mild, tech-wash detergent instead.
Don't cram your washing machine. This can prevent the jacket from getting a thorough rinse, leaving detergent residue that can damage the waterproofing.
High spin speeds can be rough on the softshell fabric. Use a gentle or low spin cycle if possible.
Fabric softener is a big no-no. It coats the fibres and reduces breathability and water repellency.
